UWHG Conistone Walls Project

Introduction

Upper Wharfedale Heritage Group organized a community landscape history research project to take place in Conistone during 2024.
Some of the drystone walls in the parish are very old and there are features of them which reveal their age. Following a protocol established by landscape archaeologist Dr David Johnson we undertook field and documentary research to record some of the features of the walls.

Progress so far

During 2024 members of Upper Wharfedale Heritage Group (UWHG) conducted a survey of drystone walls in Conistone under the leadership of Dr David Johnson.

There will be a Public Meeting in â€‹Conistone-with-Kilnsey Village Hall on â€‹â€‹Saturday April 12th 10.45

The timetable for the day is below.

This will be an all-day event.  The morning session will consist of a presentation from Prof. Angus Winchester on drystone walls in the wider landscape, which will provide context for the Conistone survey results, and a report from Dr David Johnson on the Conistone survey itself.

After lunch we will walk from the village hall looking at a number of typical walls and interpreting the landscape/fieldscape more widely.  Practical matters prevent us from looking at the walls recorded in our survey; instead this walk will take us through the area to the south of Kilnsey.

Pre-registration is not essential, but it would help if you could let us know if you plan to come – simply email uwhg.enquiries@gmail.com with ‘Conistone Walls Survey’ as the subject and tell us the names of the attendees.

Light refreshments will be available.  Please bring a packed lunch together with suitable footwear and outerwear for the afternoon session.  Adverse weather conditions may lead to changes to the structure of this part of the day.

Parking at Conistone-with-Kilnsey Village Hall is limited, so please car-share or use public transport where this is possible.
